The Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA) is a computer-based exam used nationally across multiple postgraduate medical specialties in the UK.
It assesses clinical problem-solving and professional judgement at Foundation-Year-2 level, providing a fair and standardised tool for shortlisting candidates for training posts.

Specialties using the MSRA include Emergency Medicine (ACCS), Anaesthetics, General Practice, Clinical Radiology, Psychiatry, Core Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, and Community Sexual & Reproductive Health, among others.

Your MSRA score may:

• Determine whether you are invited to interview, or

• Contribute a percentage to your final ranking, depending on the specialty.

The MSRA consists of two papers, both taken in a single computer session:

Each paper is based on the UK Foundation Programme Curriculum, testing skills expected of an FY2 doctor.
There is no negative marking — attempt every question.

• Duration: Around 170 minutes in total (with an optional 5-minute break between papers)

• Mode: Pearson VUE computer-based test (UK and international centres)

• Delivery: Two sittings each year, typically in January and February

• Cost: No exam fee (travel and accommodation not reimbursed)

• Scoring: CPS marked by correct answers; PD scored against model answer keys for consistency

This paper assesses non-technical skills through realistic workplace scenarios. Candidates take the role of an FY2 doctor and demonstrate judgement, professionalism, and empathy.

• Ranking: Order 4–5 actions from most to least appropriate

• Multiple-Choice: Choose the 3 best actions out of 8 possible responses

Success depends on understanding GMC professional standards, prioritising patient safety, teamwork, and honesty.

• Attempt every question (no negative marking)

• Use the on-screen glossary and abbreviation list if unsure

• Keep pace: around 2 minutes per PD question and under 1 minute per CPS question

• Stay calm and professional — clear reasoning is key

This paper evaluates your ability to apply clinical reasoning to everyday medical cases.

• Strong MSRA performance relies on deliberate, time-efficient preparation:

  • Start revising 2–3 months in advance

  • Use adaptive question banks to target weaknesses

  • Practise full-length timed mocks under exam conditions

  • Review GMC guidance and “Good Medical Practice” for SJT-style scenarios

  • Consolidate reasoning across core Foundation specialties

Each specialty uses the MSRA differently:

• General Practice ST1: 100% of overall ranking; no interview

• Core Psychiatry CT1: 100% of overall ranking

• ACCS Emergency Medicine: Used for shortlisting; contributes 40% of final score (60% interview)

• Anaesthetics CT1: 15% MSRA + 85% interview

• Obstetrics & Gynaecology: High scorers may bypass interview

• Core Surgery, Radiology, Ophthalmology, Nuclear Medicine: Used for shortlisting and final ranking
